Your Rehab Goals HAVE TO Fit the Needs of Your Life
Your Rehab Goals HAVE TO Fit the Needs of Your Life
It doesn't matter if you're a high-level competitor or just trying to maintain your independence living on your own. If your rehab doesn't prioritize you improving the tasks that truly matter in your life or sport, then what is it that you're doing?
We see and hear about it all too often - previous rehab (elsewhere) hasn't felt connected to the true goals of our patients.
A message to our patients and our staff - and to all PTs and rehab/training professionals out there -
Rehab has to be focused on improving the tasks that truly matter
For our older patients especially, being able to be independent at home means being able to get on/off chairs and toilets, on/off the floor, lifting and carrying objects 25-40 pounds, going up/down stairs and getting into and out of your car.
While this sounds straightforward and obvious, many of the rehab exercises typically prescribed in the rehab world don't get anywhere near preparing patients to be resilient at home.
Here at DeWitt PT, we DO prioritize exercises and tasks that will build resilience and independence.
We have our patients push, pull, carry and lift weights so they can push, pull, carry and lift things at home. We have them work on flexibility and strength to get on and off the floor and navigate novel situations so they can be ready for anything.
Rehab MUST match the true tasks our patients need to perform on a daily basis, so that's what we do!
