Optimizing Your Shoulder Part 2 - Reaching Overhead
Optimizing Your Shoulder Part 2 - Reaching Overhead
In Part 1 earlier this week, we walked through the anatomy and basic function of the shoulder girdle and how we look at it here at DeWitt PT.
Today, in Part 2, owner and physical therapist, Ryan DeWitt talks about how all these muscles work together to allow for overhead use:
Upper Trapezius
Levator Scapulae
Rhomboids
Middle and Lower Trap
Serratus Anterior
However, we tend to use them incorrectly, either due to poor patterns, mobility restrictions or previously being cued incorrectly.
Many people in the functional fitness space have heard the "Externally Rotate" cue but don't often know WHY.
The WHY is to get ALL those muscles to kick on without having to think about it individually, it just happens. Then, of course you can do more to challenge the arm in that overhead position to build resilience and strength.
Stay tuned for part 3!
